THE WORKINGS

How this calculation works

Your target is essential monthly expenses multiplied by the number of months you choose. We subtract your existing reserve, with a minimum gap of zero. Time to the target is the remaining gap divided by your monthly contribution, rounded up to a whole month. No interest is assumed.

A worked example

R12 000 of essential expenses × 3 months = R36 000. With R6 000 already saved, the gap is R30 000; at R1 000 a month it takes 30 months at zero interest.

Assumptions & limitations

  • The number of months is your planning choice, not a universal recommendation.
  • Expenses and contributions stay constant; withdrawals, interest, fees and inflation are excluded.
  • A zero contribution leaves an unfunded gap without a completion date.
