THE WORKINGS

How this calculation works

Divide required monthly debt repayments by gross monthly income and multiply by 100. Income remaining before tax and living costs is shown separately.

A worked example

R9 000 debt payments divided by R30 000 gross income gives a 30% debt-to-income ratio.

Assumptions & limitations

  • This is a descriptive ratio, not a credit score or lending limit. Lenders also assess net income, living expenses, dependants and their own affordability rules. Do not treat the balance before tax as spendable income.
