How this calculation works
Balloon equals purchase price × balloon percentage. Discount this residual in the repayment formula, then calculate monthly interest on the full outstanding balance. Compare with a zero-balloon schedule and show the final instalment including the residual.
A worked example
A 20% balloon on a R300 000 car is R60 000. It reduces regular instalments but the residual remains due and earns interest while outstanding.
Assumptions & limitations
- Deposit plus balloon cannot exceed purchase price. Rates stay constant; fees, insurance, refinancing costs and early settlement charges are excluded. The car’s future sale price may be lower than the balloon.
