THE WORKINGS

How this calculation works

Add all spending categories and planned savings, then subtract from take-home income. A negative result shows the monthly shortfall; a positive result is money not yet allocated.

A worked example

R30 000 take-home minus R25 000 spending and R3 000 savings leaves R2 000 unallocated.

Assumptions & limitations

  • Use monthly equivalents and avoid double-counting expenses already deducted from take-home pay. This does not impose a universal budget split; decide allocations for your household and include irregular annual bills in your monthly amounts.
