THE WORKINGS

How this calculation works

Today’s target is annual spending divided by your chosen withdrawal percentage. Inflate that spending target over the planning period and project investments with end-of-month contributions. Compare the projected pot with the future target.

A worked example

R20 000 monthly spending is R240 000 a year. A chosen 4% withdrawal assumption implies R6 million in today’s rand; it does not guarantee lifelong income.

Assumptions & limitations

  • The withdrawal rate is a planning heuristic, not a South African safe-withdrawal guarantee. Returns, inflation, spending and contributions stay constant. Sequence risk, tax not reflected in your return, longevity and changing expenses can materially alter results.
